Pilot City Proposed Strategies and Goals RESULTS Triangle, NC
OVERALL DIVERSITY TASK FORCE GOAL: Increase participation of communities of color and economically disadvantaged groups into RESULTS actions and groups. Adapt/create materials that are culturally sensitive.
GOAL OF THE PILOT CITY PROJECT: Implement a series of strategies to outreach to targeted groups and evaluate success, lessons learned, etc.
METHODOLOGY: Multi-phased exploratory action and needs assessment.
SUGGESTED STRATEGIES:
PHASE I: PLANNING (1-2 months)
Hold preplanning sessions with team members to discuss the following:
1. What are the targeted groups for the NC pilot RESULTS group?
2. Lower income families and global issues? Diversity panel at IC recommended starting with domestic issues and then move on to global issues. RESULTS Triangle only a global action group. How to go about that?
3. What changes would the group have to incur? Change in meeting place? scope?
4. Role of other allies – ONE, CARES, etc?
5. Own resources to do this? Commitment from members?
6. Areas covered by the group (i.e., Durham and Chapel Hill) differ in demographics /history / economic trends, etc.
7. Other
PHASE II: INFORMATION EXCHANGE and DEVELOPMENT OF TRUST/MUTUAL GOALS (3 months)
Identify a leader/contact person in the minority community
Set up an informal meeting or two with the contact person* to cover:
1. This is RESULTS
2. RESULTS activities nationally and globally
3. Diversity Task Force and RESULTS Triangle as a pilot city
4. What do I need to know about your community? Culture, citizenship, resources, transportation, etc
5. How can we link our groups if RESULTS group lack representation from targeted group (e.g., members don’t speak Spanish)?
6. What do you see as barriers for our group’s efforts to reach out to your community?
a. Communication: Lack of e-mail, reading level, lack of English language, etc
b. Cultural Issues: Differences in perception of government – negative/fearful relationship between citizens and government/law enforcement in some developing countries and/or times in history. Negative perception of citizens exercising ‘pressure’ to members of congress.
c. Logistics: Transportation, child care, etc
NC group revise what it has been accomplished so far and identify mid-course changes, resources needed, etc if needed.
PHASE III: TARGETED JOINT ACTION (6 months)
1. Determine as a team which/how to adapt training/outreach materials to increase cultural relevance
2. Decide as a team if it is time to hold an informational meeting. Identify people who may be interested, invite the wider community
a. Use Compassion and Empowerment presentation (?), Everyday Heroes DVD, testimonial from RESUTS activists, write letters to MOC or media (keep in mind language/literacy level)
b. Gather contact information from interested people
c. Set up training sessions
3. Decide/Agree on some or all of the following joint activities with targeted groups:
a. Join our Global RESULTS group or start one (e.g., National)
b. Listen to conference calls together
c. Do fundraisers/be part of outreach activities
d. Hold monthly meetings to focus on public or political education/action
e. Incorporate this effort in overall outreach activities of the group
NC group revise what it has been accomplished so far and compiles written lessons learned, provides an action plan for other groups to implement, materials, etc.
